Special Projects

The Circular Economy Hub Project

The Circular Economy Hub Development Project is establishing regional hubs in the Alberni-Clayoquot, Cowichan Valley, and qathet Regional Districts to support the recovery, reuse, and repurposing of construction, renovation, and demolition (C&D) materials. By turning construction waste into new economic opportunities, the project aims to drive job creation, strengthen local supply chains, and advance circular economy solutions that build long-term regional resilience.

Key Outcomes
  • Community Engagement & Hub Development: Engage businesses, industry associations, local governments, entrepreneurs, artists, non-profits, and community members to identify regional priorities and growth opportunities. Conduct material market analysis in each region to inform the development of collaborative circular economy hubs that enable material recovery, reuse, recycling, and value-added manufacturing.
  • Business Support: Provided one-on-one support to 12 businesses across the three regions to integrate circular practices into their operations, increase competitiveness, and facilitate material matchmaking to maximize local reuse and reprocessing opportunities. Building on this work, we are now offering 10 spots in each region for BCGB Certification, including access to the new Trades checklist.
  • Skills Training: Facilitate workforce upskilling through accredited training programs, providing training for 60 forestry-impacted workers and supporting job creation within emerging circular economy sectors.
  • Economic Diversification and Growth: Expand local reuse industries, strengthen regional supply chains, and foster cross-sector collaboration to support sustainable economic growth across participating communities.
