Somass Lands Deconstruction Project

The Somass Lands Deconstruction Project provided hands‑on training in construction waste reduction, material recovery, and circular economy principles. Through this initiative, students gained practical experience on the redevelopment of the 43‑acre former Somass sawmill site, which was transformed using deconstruction and salvage practices. The project equipped participants with real‑world skills in dismantling structures, safely recovering reusable materials, and applying circular approaches within the construction sector.

  • Circular Economy Education: The program introduced students to circular economy concepts within the construction sector, emphasizing waste reduction, material recovery, and responsible resource management as part of a major community redevelopment initiative.
  • Reducing Barriers to Employment: The program was fully funded for eligible participants, with additional supports such as transportation and childcare assistance to reduce barriers to training and future employment.
  • Workforce Development: With space for 12 students, the program contributed to building local workforce capacity in deconstruction, salvage, and circular construction practices.
